Chapter 8

Aiden

Luc fumed beside me in the truck as he took the corner too fast and sent the truck into a slide on the dirt road.

“Fuck!” Jerking the wheel, he managed to get the vehicle under control just before it fishtailed into a ditch.

“Feel better now?” I asked mildly.

“Shut up.” He shot me a glare and tightened his grip on the wheel.

“Killing us both isn’t going to help.” I knew he was stressed about the bar and the Hunters, but this tantrum had everything to do with my involvement with Rayna.

“You’re lucky to still be walking, brother.” He turned onto the main highway that led to the bar and sped up. He kept his eyes glued to the road and spoke through clenched teeth. “Why her?”

His question pissed me off. “Why not her?”

“Because she’s mine, dammit. That’s why.” His dark blue eyes flashed sapphire in the light as if he was moments from shifting.

I shook my head slowly. “No she isn’t. She’s not your mate. And never would’ve been. She’s not your one. If she was, you would’ve already done something about it.”

“You don’t know that.” His hands flexed against the steering wheel.

“Shit, Luc. Be honest with yourself. You’ve been sharing that house with her for five years. Almost six now. Have you ever once even kissed her?” My gut tightened. The idea of my brother’s hands on her stirred the primal animal in me.

His nostrils flared and I knew he sensed my wolf.

“Well, have you?” I demanded, my irritation building.

“I’ve thought about it,” he said defensively.

“When?” Because he’d never once acted like she was more than a sister to him.

“When we were in high school.”

I shook my head, disgusted. “She’s not your fucking backup girl, Luc. Jesus Christ.”

“I never—”

“Yes you did. You just told me she belongs to you. That no one else had the right to make a move. How else am I supposed to take that?”

We rounded a bend in the road and the bar came into view along with the lights of the fire truck and the sheriff’s cruiser. Luc pulled into the lot, parked, and killed the engine.

Sitting back, he turned and met my judgmental stare. “She’s my best friend, Aiden. I watch out for her. She was never supposed to become a were. I never wanted this life for her.”

I couldn’t necessarily blame him for that. We lived our lives under a veil of secrecy and were constantly being harassed by the likes of the Hunters. But he’d brought her into this long ago when he’d trusted her with our secret.

He reached for the door handle, but I placed my hand on his arm, stopping him, and said, “She was already one of us, part of our family, and would’ve been no matter what happened earlier tonight.”

“That might be true,” he said and shrugged me off. “But she doesn’t have a choice now, does she?”

“No. She doesn’t.” Because there was no way I was letting her go now.

He let out a growl of disapproval and jumped out of the truck, slamming the door behind him.
